When we founded Interplay Architects, we set out to create a studio that reflected a design philosophy rooted in collaboration and sensitivity to context. The inspiration for our name came from a source that, though outside the world of architecture, embodies the spirit of shared creativity that defines our work: Interplay , an album by jazz pianist Bill Evans.

The Journey of Japanese Cedar: A Visit to Kagoshima’s Sawmill

A few weeks ago, we had the opportunity to visit a sawmill in Kagoshima, Japan, where we were warmly welcomed and introduced to the art of Japanese woodworking. We observed a prototype of the façade we’re developing, crafted in Japanese cedar—a material with a rich cultural heritage that has long played a role in Japanese architecture.
