Manufacture of furniture (PKD division 31)

This division includes the manufacture of furniture and parts thereof, excluding sheets and plates of glass, stone, concrete or similar materials for the manufacture of furniture. The processes used in furniture manufacture are standard methods involving shaping material and assembling components, including cutting, forming and laminating. Product design, because of its aesthetic and functional properties, is an important aspect of the production process. Some processes used in furniture manufacture are similar to processes applied in other sections of manufacturing. For example, cutting and assembly occur in the manufacture of roof trusses, which is classified in the relevant subclasses of division 16 "Manufacture of wood and of products of wood and cork, except furniture; manufacture of articles of straw and plaiting materials". However, many processes distinguish the manufacture of wooden furniture from the manufacture of wood products. Similarly, in the manufacture of metal furniture, techniques are used that are also applied in the manufacture of fabricated metal products, classified in the relevant subclasses of division 25 "Manufacture of fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment". The process of forming plastic furniture is similar to the forming of other plastic products. However, the manufacture of plastic furniture tends to become a specialised activity.
