This section includes activities related to the carriage of persons or goods by rail, pipeline, road, water or air transport. This section includes the transport of passengers irrespective of the reasons for which the transport takes place - whether for personal, business or recreational reasons; the transport may be scheduled or unscheduled. Hiring of transport equipment with driver or crew, as well as postal and courier activities, are classified in this section. This section also includes supporting transport activities (for example terminal and parking operations, cargo handling, warehousing and storage, as transport-support activities such as silo operation, warehousing and storage facilities, tank storage). Transport activities classified in divisions 49, 50 and 53 often involve related activities (for example packaging, cargo handling operations, temporary crating, sampling and weighing of goods) that solely support transport activities. Such supporting activities should be classified in division 52 only if they are carried out on behalf of other entities. This section also includes:

This section excludes:
- general inspection, maintenance and repair of transport equipment, excluding motor vehicles, classified in the relevant subclasses of groups 33.1,
- construction, maintenance and repair of roads, railways, seaports, airport aprons, classified in the relevant subclasses of division 42,
- rental of transport equipment without driver or crew, classified in the relevant subclasses of groups 77.1 and 77.3,
- transport activities as an integral part of recreational facilities (for example in amusement parks), classified in the relevant subclasses of group 93.2,
- maintenance and repair of motor vehicles (excluding motorcycles), classified in 95.31.A, 95.31.B, 95.31.C,
- maintenance and repair of motorcycles, classified in 95.32.Z.
